Though it may seem like the only things I ever do are somehow related to dance - taking ballet class, sewing pointe shoes, going to the theater as many times as I have time for - I promise that I actually do occasionally do things that are completely unrelated to ballet. I enjoy reading, think that math is interesting, am fascinated by different languages, and like to do art. Before I switched to online high school (so that I would be able to continue working towards my diploma while living in Saint Petersburg), I attended an arts high school, where I majored in Visual Arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, etc). I had an art class every afternoon and assignments that had to be completed outside of class time, which meant that I was doing a lot of art. Unfortunately, I haven't been doing too much art while I'm here. This is partially due to a lack of time, and partially due to a lack of access to materials, but I realized recently that I had really started missing doing art, so I decided to fix the situation.
Having brought my entire (very large, rather heavy) collection of drawing markers all the way to Saint Petersburg, I decided that I should do my best to actually get some good use out of them. One afternoon, I packed my favorite tote bag with the markers, a sketchbook, some snacks, a bottle of water, and picnic blanket, then set out to find somewhere to sit and draw.
I eventually found myself sitting on a grassy area on near the Peter and Paul Fortress, looking out over the Neva River towards the bridge which would later take me back to the Academy. I sat and drew for several hours, enjoying the brightly shining sun and the peace of the afternoon.
Here's the result.
I like to call it Katie Hasn't Done Art in Four Months.
I was more than just a little off on the proportions and the drawing is no masterpiece, but I was drawing for the process rather than for the product, so the little problems don't even matter.
