The academy is very near Nevsky Prospect, the busy street along which the city's two major shopping malls and many other stores are located. Nevsky Prospect is full of cafes. To get an idea of how many there are, try to imagine this. Think of the typical concentration of Starbucks stores in a busy metropolitan area in the United States, then imagine how many coffee shops there would be if there were three different coffee companies, all of which are that common, add in the occasional individually-owned shop and one actual Starbucks, and that will give you an accurate idea if how many cafes there are on Nevsky Prospect.
Needless to say, we had no problem finding a place to buy coffee. We only had to cross the street and we could have our choice between two different cafes. I think that we made an excellent choice, though. I'll show you why in just a moment, but first I am going to try to make use of my Russian language skills to talk about this photo.
Это моё фото. Вот я и вот мои подруги. Направо, это Вирджиниа. Налево, это Верин.
(This is my photo. Here I am and here are my friends. To the right, that is Virginia. To the left, that is Berin).
The reason why I think that we made an excellent choice of cafe is that I was able to purchase an extremely delicious drink that I enjoyed a lot. It was served in a cool double-layered clear glass cup and looked so beautiful that I was almost sad to start eating it.
It was called a Snickers Shake. The base was chocolate and it was topped with chocolate whipped cream, chopped peanuts, and chocolate sauce. There was also a layer of chopped nuts underneath the whipped cream. Yum.
So... that was the delicious part of my Sunday. The rest was less exciting, consisting mostly of doing laundry and other things that I didn't really want to do but needed to. (And writing this blog post, of course!)
I am entirely certain that some of the drying racks have disappeared from the drying room in the basement, because I had a lot more trouble finding space to hang my clothes than I have ever before, even though I did my laundry earlier in the day than I have previously. Logically, it would seem that there should be more space left in the early afternoon than at ten in the evening, since other people would not have had those extra eight or so hours to fill the racks up with their clean laundry. Combining that information with a general lessening in the feeling of crowding that I got upon entering the room, I have determined that some of the laundry racks must be on vacation.
That meant that I needed to work a bit of magic and create space for my clothes where there appeared to be none. As a result, my three loads of laundry plus the half-dozen leotards that I hand-washed are currently scattered in strange places all around the drying room. I really hope I don't loose any of my socks because of that. Or any of my other clothes, for that matter. Socks are just so easy to lose!
I had to take a panorama of what the drying room looked like because a regular photo couldn't properly capture the feeling of the room. This is what it looked like when I left, but it wasn't much emptier before I came and added my three and a half loads of laundry to the mix. I don't envy the people who still had clothes in the washing machine when I left!
